Ash Tallmadge

Naturalist Guide

Ash is a professional guide who has introduced guests to the wonders of the Rocky Mountain and Southwestern United States for nearly 10 years. Born in Laramie, Wyoming, her roots in the Jackson Hole Valley run deep. Her great-grandfather settled here in 1916 after a stint as an Army Ranger manning the southern entrance of Yellowstone and her family has remained tied to the area ever since. Ash spent her youth exploring the Jackson Hole Valley; watching the elk rut in autumn evenings, catching rainbow trout in cutbanks of the Snake River and snowshoeing in deep snow looking for martens and hare. After adventures she would rush to her family’s independent bookstore on Jackson’s Town Square to voraciously study local flora and fauna after every day out. Her passion and appreciation of the valley has continued to grow throughout her life.

As an undergraduate at Willamette University, Ash studied neuropsychology, where she learned skills to understand the brain and mind. Linking her love of the outdoors with her schooling led to an understanding of the value of spending time in nature. After college she spent time in Africa learning about ancient, indigenous living and unfettered wild landscapes. Following her curiosity about human relationships with the natural world, she went on to study Herbalism in Massachusetts, gaining skills and certification with plant medicine and botany. She then began to focus on experiential learning/teaching and a concept she calls Nature as Medicine through her outdoor company “Hearts & Bones”, which she based in New Mexico and Arizona.

Ash focuses on sharing the importance of nature and wildness with her clients. She teaches ecology, geology, local history, herbal medicine, and the future importance of humans connecting to Nature in order to preserve and protect wild spaces. Her approach is hands-on and encourages guests to engage with their surroundings. Her joy comes from seeing guests have their “ah-ha”moments while witnessing something incredible happen in nature.
